Galle Fort

Experience a day’s excursion 40kms south of our property and visit this 17th Century Fort, recognized by UNESCO as a World heritage Site. Built during the Dutch Colonial period, spanning 52 hectares of land, this fort is one of the busiest places in Galle consisting of a multi-ethnic population living within the fort. Visit the Maritime Museum, Galle Temple, Antique and Jewelry shops and savor the best regional cuisine at the restaurants. Take a stroll around the fort enjoying the great architecture of the buildings with old stone walls, the ramparts, Dutch colonial villas, the clock tower, the Old Dutch Hospital, Dutch period houses, Galle Fort Mosque and the beautiful Dutch Reformed Church.  Wind down in the cool evening breeze experiencing a breathtaking sunset ocean view from over the fort walls.

Tea Factory

Take a drive through highlands flanked by dwarf size tea bushes, and experience the fascinating operations of a southern low country Tea factory. Get first hand insight to the plucking of fresh young tea leaves by brightly dressed tea pickers, learn the history of Ceylon tea and visit a factory where the leaves are dried, rolled, fermented and separated into different grades of black tea. The black tea of low country is known to be extremely dark hence the strongest when brewed.

Turtle Hatchery

Sea Turtle Hatcheries are a common site in the South West coastal belt of Sri Lanka. These are sanctuaries where sea turtles are hatched in a safe and controlled environment, dedicated to conserve these sea turtles and to prevent their extinction. The hatching season in Sri Lanka is known to be from November – May. It is recorded that Sri Lanka has five species of the seven turtle species identified in the world, nestling on its beaches. The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery located approximately fifteen minutes’ drive from our property has four of all five turtle species in Sri Lanka including “white turtle”, the very rare species. There are turtle hatcheries in Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna as well.

Moonstone Mines

Moonstone Mine Meetiyagoda is situated in Hikkaduwa about a half hour drive from this property. This is Sri Lanka’s largest moonstone mine and it is famous for its blue shine, which creates the difference between Indian and Sri Lankan moonstones. Moonstone is a popular gem stone known for the glow of its inner light and is mined from deposits in a depth of about 10 to 40 meters below the surface. Moonstones are particularly very popular among European tourists.

Masks

The village of Ambalangoda which is approximately fifteen minutes from River Loft, is famous for Mask carvings and mask dancing, both local traditions in the southern coastal region. Experience a haven of local culture and view many varieties of interesting masks at the  Ambalangoda Factory and Mask Museum. Watch the artisans carving and painting colourful masks from simple pieces of wood and learn of the rich history of this cultural art and even purchase a few beautiful souvenirs on your visit to this museum.

Cinnamon Village

Discover the world’s best Cinnamon plantations on the south coast of Sri Lanka by visiting a local spice producer. This spice which is used mostly as an aromatic condiment and used for flavouring in a variety of cuisine is endemic to Sri Lanka and was first discovered by the Portuguese. You can observe the local peelers at work and the intriguing processing which does not involve machinery but is still carried out by hand a few tools through over hundreds of years.

Polonnaruwu Ancient City

Identified as the 2nd capital of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa is the ancient ruin city created by Parakramabahu the great in the 12th century. It is famous for its fabulous garden-city and Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

This city was declared a world heritage site in 1982. It is famous for its ruins situated on a 200 meter high massive rock surrounded by reservoirs and gardens. UNESCO ranked this site as the 8th wonder of the world due to the stunning castle ruins right on
the apex of this rock.

Dambulla Cave Temple

The best preserved largest cave temple at a height of 160 meters higher than the surrounding plains is found in Dambulla. This attraction contains ancient statues and paintings spread
across 5 caves.

Temple of Tooth Relic

This temple where the tooth relic of Gautama Buddha is enshrined, is located in the heart of Kandy city. It is a historic location declared as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1988 and is a sacred place of worship visited by many tourists and locals through the year.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

The royal botanical gardens established in 1821, spans over 147 acres of land comprising 4000 species of plants including, medicinal plants, palm trees, spices and orchids.

Kataragama Temple

Located 228km south east of Colombo, surrounded by jungle is the pilgrim’s town named Kataragama. It is a sacred town often visited by Hindu and Buddhist devotees through the year. It is famous for a festival which is celebrated once a year as well as it is known for its temples and shrines dedicated to god Kataragama.

Yala National Park

It is the 2nd largest national park in Sri Lanka. Designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, this park bordering the ocean is known to be a great tourist attraction for lovers of wild life, especially to capture some unique moments of movement of elephants, leopards and aquatic birds.

Hummanaya Blow Hole

It is the 2nd largest blowhole in the world and the only identified blowhole in Sri Lanka. This water fountain created by its geological features, is located in a small fishing village named Kudawella. Located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, the name ‘blowhole’ refers to the noise heard at a distance away when the blowhole is active.
